Ideal Weight Calculator โ Healthy Weight Range by Height
The CalcNest Ideal Weight Calculator estimates your healthy weight range using four established medical formulas: Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi. Each formula takes a slightly different approach, and the calculator presents all four results along with an average to give you a realistic healthy weight range rather than a single number. It also factors in frame size (small, medium, large) for more personalized results. Use this calculator alongside BMI and body fat percentage for a comprehensive body composition assessment.

How the Ideal Weight Calculator Works
This calculator uses four clinically established formulas to estimate ideal body weight based on height and gender. Each formula was originally developed for pharmaceutical dosing but is widely used as a general health reference.
Devine (1974): Male: 50 + 2.3 ร (inches over 60) kg | Female: 45.5 + 2.3 ร (inches over 60) kg
Robinson (1983): Male: 52 + 1.9 ร (inches over 60) kg | Female: 49 + 1.7 ร (inches over 60) kg
Miller (1983): Male: 56.2 + 1.41 ร (inches over 60) kg | Female: 53.1 + 1.36 ร (inches over 60) kg
Hamwi (1964): Male: 48 + 2.7 ร (inches over 60) kg | Female: 45.5 + 2.2 ร (inches over 60) kg
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most accurate ideal weight formula?
No single formula is most accurate for everyone because ideal weight depends on factors like muscle mass, bone density, and body fat distribution that formulas cannot capture. The Devine formula is most commonly used in clinical settings for medication dosing. For general health assessment, looking at the range across all four formulas provides a more realistic target. Pair this calculator with body fat percentage for the best picture.
Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?
Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas were developed for specific medical purposes and may not reflect optimal weight for every individual. A healthy weight is better defined as the weight at which your metabolic markers (blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol) are in normal ranges and you can perform daily activities comfortably. Athletes may weigh significantly more than their calculated ideal weight due to muscle mass and still be very healthy.
How does frame size affect ideal weight?
Larger-framed individuals naturally weigh more than smaller-framed people of the same height due to heavier bones and larger muscle attachments. You can estimate your frame size by wrapping your thumb and middle finger around your wrist: if they overlap you have a small frame, if they just touch you have a medium frame, and if they do not touch you have a large frame. Ideal weight adjustments of ยฑ10% are typical for frame size.
